Intelligent Cloud Hosting

Cloud hosting and deployment that your team can understand

Application hosting on AWS with automated deployment, monitoring and backups, set up so that failures are expected, visible and recoverable.

Indicative starting price: $2,999 (USD). Final price depends on scope.

How hosting is laid out and protectedVisitors reach your application only through a load balancer, the single way into your AWS environment. Inside a private network, two application servers run your application and talk to a database that only they can reach. Operations cover everything: logs and metrics, alerts to a named person, backups with a tested restore, and secrets kept out of code. Visitors browsers and apps HTTPS Your AWS environment Private network, not reachable from the internet App server A runs the app App server B a second copy Database reachable only from the app servers Load balancer the only way in Operations: watching and protecting every part Logs and metrics Alerts to a named person Backups, restore tested Secrets kept out of code How hosting is laid out and protectedVisitors reach your application only through a load balancer, the single way into your AWS environment. Traffic enters at one point. The application and the database live in a private zone, and monitoring and backups cover every tier.
Technical notes
  • Target platform is AWS. Infrastructure is defined in code so the environment can be rebuilt and reviewed.
  • The database security rules allow connections from the application tier only.
  • Secrets are held in configuration managed outside the repository.
  • Backups are restored once before go-live to prove they work.

A release is a series of gates

Nothing is deployed by hand. Each change passes the same checks, and a failure at any gate stops the release.

  1. ReviewA change is reviewed before it is merged.
  2. BuildThe application builds from a clean checkout.
  3. Automated testsThe test suite passes. A failure stops the release.
  4. Staging checkDeployed to a staging copy and checked before production.
  5. ReleaseThe pipeline deploys; the previous version is kept so you can roll back.
  6. Post-release checksHealth checks pass and alerts are watching the new version.

Who is responsible for what

The project sets everything up. Anything ongoing is agreed separately and written down, not assumed.

Set up during the project versus agreed separately.

DeploymentAutomated pipeline and documented release steps.Who approves and triggers releases.
MonitoringHealth checks, logs, metrics and alert rules.Who receives alerts, and any out-of-hours cover.

CostSizing recommendation and a cost estimate.Periodic cost reviews.

Problems this solves

  • The site or application runs on one server that only one person understands.
  • Deployments are manual and risky.
  • Nobody is alerted until a customer complains.
  • Backups exist but have never been restored.

What you receive

  • Cloud infrastructure on AWS, documented and reproducible
  • Automated deployment pipeline
  • Monitoring and alerting that someone is responsible for reading
  • Backups with a tested restore procedure
  • Least-privilege access, with secrets kept out of code

How the work runs

Each phase has an input from you and a written output from us. Out-of-hours cover and ongoing operation are agreed separately.

PhaseWhat happensYou provideYou receive
Step 1Assess the current setup Review how the application is built, what it depends on and how it is deployed today. Read access to the code and current hosting; a list of known incidents. A short findings note and a proposed target design.
Step 2Design the environment Define the network layout, access rules, sizing and an estimate of running cost. Security and budget constraints; AWS account decisions. A documented design and cost estimate.
Step 3Build and automate Create the infrastructure from code, set up the deployment pipeline, monitoring and backups. Review of the design and access to the AWS account. Reproducible infrastructure and a working pipeline.
Step 4Prove recovery Run a restore from backup and trigger test alerts before go-live. Confirmation of what a successful restore looks like. A written record of the restore test.
Step 5Go live and hand over Migrate, switch over and document how to deploy, monitor and recover. A migration window and named owners. Runbook and a handover session.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which AWS region do you use?

We choose the region with you, based on where your users are and any data-residency needs.

How do you keep hosting costs under control?

We recommend right-sized resources and budget alerts, and give you a cost estimate before go-live. Periodic cost reviews are agreed separately.

Do you offer an uptime guarantee?

We do not publish a guarantee figure on this site. Availability targets are agreed per project and depend on the architecture and budget.

Can you host an existing application?

Usually yes. We first review how the application is built and what it depends on, then propose a hosting design and a migration plan.

How is the work priced?

The 'starting at' figure is indicative. After a short discovery conversation we share a written scope and an estimate based on what the project actually involves.

Who owns the code and the data?

This is agreed in writing before work starts. Our default is that you own what we build for you, and that your data stays in systems you control.

Not sure your hosting is safe to depend on?

Tell us how the application runs today. We will say what we would change first and why.
